The Label of Truth - What’s hiding in Your Bathroom?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and plays a significant role in overall health. It provides the elimination of toxins and impurities from the body in the form of sweat, and it absorbs lotions and oils into the blood stream through three distinct layers: 1. Epidermis – The tough, protective outer layer. This is where exfoliation takes place, color pigment is stored and where the cells that help fight infection is located. 2. Dermis – This is the middle layer that nourishes the epidermis and is made up of blood vessels, nerve endings, connective tissue, sweat and oil glands. This layer is sensitive to the touch. 3. Subcutaneous Layer –The third and final layer of skin that is made up of connective tissue, blood vessels and cells that store fat. This layer protects the body from injuries and retains body heat. What is going Into Your Body? Products containing dyes, food coloring, chemicals and synthetic ingredients are absorbed through the skin into the blood stream, and are deposited throughout the internal system in the form of toxins that accumulate, and over time can contribute to disease within the body. This dis-ease can show up in a number of ways, but for women some of the most common are acne, uterine and breast cysts, and fibroids. One of the biggest ingredient culprits of this poisoning of the body through the skin is mineral oil. A clear liquid with no odor, mineral oil is produced as a result of the distillation process of gasoline from crude oil (petroleum). Petroleum is abundant in supply and makes for a cost-effective ingredient in a number of beauty products. Cosmetic manufacturers use petroleum/mineral oil generously in several over-the-counter products such as most baby products, lipstick, moisturizer, soap, shampoo, facial cleanser, bubble bath, sunscreen, body lotion, body wash and detergent. When applied to the skin, mineral oil acts as an additional layer on the skin and is difficult to absorb. It clogs the skin’s pores, which in turn slows down the body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins. Once the oil is absorbed into the skin it goes through the normal process of being broken down by the liver and is passed through the intestinal tract. However, instead of being a benefit to the body, the mineral oil absorbs all of the fat-soluble vitamins found in the intestinal tract, which can cause nutritional deficiencies. Time to Make a Change If improving your overall health is one of your resolutions for 2008, to do an outstanding job is going to take more than diet and exercise alone. Incorporating the use of nature-based products that promote health and wellness into your daily routine is going to be vital to your overall success. To find out just how much mineral oil you’re putting into your body, before you go to bed tonight, conduct “The Label of Truth”. This simple task involves picking up some of the products in your bathroom to examine the ingredients. You’ll be surprised at just how many products contain mineral oil. Once the shock of what you find wears off, the idea of giving up your favorite beauty products is going to be tough. But if you are serious about taking control of your health from head to toe, inside and out, then it is time to retire that good ole petroleum from your life for good and find new, healthier favorites. Think about the items you already use for your daily self-care; those same items you throw into your shopping cart at Target, Wal-Mart or your local grocery store. Now think about shifting the dollars you are already spending on self-care products to nature-based products for overall improved health. Most health food stores carry some form of natural or nature-based alternatives. There are even more options available by searching online or seeking out direct sales companies that specialize in wellness products. A word of caution however, you may find that some of the new products you switch to are a bit more pricey than the commercial stuff you’re used to buying, there’s a reason for that. Products based in nature require more time and special needs when producing, and many of them are handmade – no machines. The overall objective isn’t about making money, but making quality products that improve people’s lives. So as you step into 2008 with goals of revving up your overall health, don’t squawk about “how much more” healthier products may cost. Cut out the daily trips to Starbucks, buy the roasted grinds, and make your java at home instead. With the money you’re keeping in your pocket just from this small adjustment you’ll be able to afford the lotion, deodorant and other self-care products that will over time improve your health and ultimately your life. That in itself is priceless. © 2007 Kitara R. Wilson WANT TO USE THIS ARTICLE IN YOUR E-ZINE OR WEB SITE? You can, as long as you include this complete blurb with it: Kitara R.
